The Papua New Guinea Adventist Tertiary Students Association (PNGATSA) was established in 1984 within state institutions, the same year as Pacific Adventist University (PAU). Its primary purpose has been to provide a spiritual and social support network for Seventh-day Adventist students studying in tertiary institutions across the country
From its early beginnings, PNGATSA has been committed to helping students remain grounded in their faith while pursuing higher education. The association has organized conventions, first authorized by the Papua New Guinea Union Mission (PNGUM) under the leadership of Pr. Collin Winch, where students themselves contributed financially, selected speakers—both local and international—and chose venues across Papua New Guinea. PNGUM also appointed chaplains to serve as mentors for Adventist students in state institutions.
Over the years, PNGATSA has evolved to strengthen its connection with the church and professional networks. Key developments include PNGUM’s interventions to provide guidance and financial support from 2005, the establishment of a PCM Chaplain’s office in 2017, and the coordination of professional and financial assistance through organizations such as ASI and PAN from 2019. Since 2020, PNGUM has monitored convention planning, proposing central sites such as Kabiufa, Sonoma, PAU, and the SDA Centres at UPNG and Unitech, while local missions have supported sub-association activities at the provincial level.
Importantly, PNGATSA is not limited to Adventist students alone. It provides an inclusive environment where students from all denominations are welcomed and valued as part of the wider student movement in Papua New Guinea. This openness reflects the association’s commitment to unity, fellowship, and collaboration in academic, spiritual, and professional growth.
Today, PNGATSA continues to serve as a unifying platform for students in tertiary institutions across Papua New Guinea. The association fosters fellowship, mentorship, and professional development, engaging both students and local Adventist professionals in various initiatives. By collaborating with church leadership, professional networks, and international partners, PNGATSA supports projects, sources resources, and nurtures human resource development for the benefit of both its members and the wider community.
